To get the most out of the Flagellant, you'll need to decide what sort of comp you want to run with and how you want to build the hero up. These paths work essentially as hero classes or specializations that you might find in other games, and they can change how a hero performs entirely. In Darkest Dungeon 2, every hero has 4 paths that you can pick from when adding them to your team at the Crossroads. There is a 6% chance of this mini-boss appearing after a Resistance Encounter and it will take a lot of quick-thinking to work through. Something that's important to note about the Flagellant is that having him on your team can trigger a random encounter with a mini-boss called Death.

It's a worthwhile investment to pick up the Flagellant as quickly as possible as he can make a real difference in late-game boss battles. You can do this by spending candles at the Altar of Hope in a section called The Living Fields. The Flagellant, however, will need to be unlocked. They will be instantly available for you to use. While afflicted with the curse your hero will become weaker and weaker until they finally feast on blood, at which point they enter “bloodlust” and reveal the curse's hidden power. There are some Darkest Dungeon 2 heroes which you will not need to unlock by spending candles at the Altar of Hope. The expansion’s namesake curse turns your hero into a vampire, which sounds a lot better than it turns out to be. There are also 4 new unique boss monsters to be found with all new mechanics to figure out or die trying. All of which want nothing more than to feast on your party’s inner juices- that’s vampire talk for blood. The new location brings new enemies in the form of bloodsucking insects, people, and insect-people. It may appear early on in your quest, but I wouldn’t step foot in here without a highly leveled party. Along with a bunch of other-worldly insects is a definite case of bloodsuckers - and I don’t mean mosquitoes. Yes, your estate has seen better days, and The Courtyard is proof of it. Added to the other locations in the game comes The Courtyard, a lavish garden turned swampy mire.
